DIY Shabby Chic Organising Board from Old Mirror

DIY Shabby Chic Organising Mail Pin Cork BoardThis is our yet another Shabby Chic project. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

This how my mirror looked before the makeover.

I bought this mirror long, long time ago (before I even new my husband!). I think this mirror was actually one of the first things I bought for my first ever apartment years ago. The mirror was of a sentimental value to me! The mirror survived 3 moves, but sadly broke into pieces during our last move. I didn’t want to throw it away, so I came up with an idea of making it into a  shabby chic organising board for our new home. It actually came out better then I was expecting. See for yourself.

Step 1
This is what I used to complete my shabby project:
scissors, sanding paper, stapler, fabric of your choice, primer, white eggshell paint and paint brush. You also need an old frame and cork board.

Step 1
I primed the mirror frame first (I didn’t sand it because the frame was very detailed and I wouldn’t be able to do it properly). After priming I painted it using B & Q eggshell white paint. Once the paint was dry I gave it a good sand. While sanding I particularly focused on the edges and detailing of the frame.

Step 3
I removed the cork board  from it’s original wooden frame and I measured how much I had to cut out (I bought the board at eBay and it was a little bit bigger then the mirror frame). The board was very thin so I cut it to size with ordinary craft scissors.

Step 4
The grey fabric has been purchased in Ikea (grey fabric is great for shabby projects!). I cut it to size and  I used the ordinary paper stapler to fix the fabric to the board. If your board is slightly thicker than mine then you can use glue gun or heavy duty stapler. Easy!

Step 5
I used existing turnbuttons (in this case nails) to secure the board in place.  I also used existing D-rings. Mirror originally had 3 D-rings (as seen on the picture below) so instead of hanging my board horizontally I used them to hang it vertically.

This is the end result. I am so pleased with the way it turned out. It’s not only pretty, but it’s also very useful. We pin on it things like tickets, post cards, invitations, coupons and many other stuff. It definitely made our lives more organised.

  1. This is such a good idea! I actually happen to have a broken mirror in my basement right now, so… 🙂
